Matchday Retail to Training Ground Offices: Building for Rotherham United AFC

When Rotherham United AFC needed a smarter matchday retail solution at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, they came to AdaptABox for a container conversion that looked the part as well as doing the job. The result led to a second project a few months later: a stacked container office for admin and meeting space at the club's training ground.

A Retail Unit Built for Matchdays

Delivered in March 2026, the retail and merchandise unit sits pitch side at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, giving fans a proper point of sale on matchday. Rather than a standard container look, the brief called for something with a bit more presence:

• A wide opening hatch built into the front elevation, giving staff a clear serving window for matchday queues.
• Timber slat cladding across the exterior, moving away from the industrial container look towards a warmer, higher end finish.
• Full club branding, with the Rotherham United crest and club name applied to the front of the unit.

The finished unit gives the club a permanent, branded retail presence that can be opened up on matchdays and secured the rest of the time, all built to a finish that matches the quality fans expect from their club.

A Stacked Office for the Training Ground

Off the back of the retail unit, Rotherham United came back to us for a second project this season: a stacked, two-container office at the training ground, fitted out as admin and meeting space for the club.

Stacking two containers gave the club a compact footprint with more usable space than a single unit could offer. The build includes:

• An external staircase, giving independent access to the upper level.
• A glazed window on the upper container, bringing natural light into the office space.
• Ground floor double door access, with the lower container housing further office space.

Delivered and craned into position on site, the finished building gives the club dedicated admin and meeting space at the training ground without the time or disruption of a traditional build.

Why It Worked

Two very different briefs, a customer facing retail kiosk and an internal admin building, but both delivered as container conversions fitted out to a specific need, on a footprint that suited the site. It's exactly the kind of flexibility that makes container conversions a good fit for sports clubs looking to add space quickly, whether that's fan facing or behind the scenes.
