Container Solutions for Emergency and Temporary Accommodation
Councils and homelessness charities across the UK are under growing pressure to provide safe, dignified shelter quickly, often without the time, budget, or site conditions needed for traditional construction. AdaptABox offers a faster, more flexible alternative: converted shipping containers fitted out as safe, self-contained temporary accommodation units.
Why containers work for emergency and temporary housing
- Speed of delivery. Because units are fitted out off-site, container-based accommodation can be ready for use in a fraction of the time of a traditional build, important when shelter is needed urgently.
- Flexibility of site. Units can be placed on land that wouldn't easily support permanent construction, including short-term or leased sites, and can be relocated if a site's use changes.
- Scalability. Councils can start with a small number of units and add more as need and funding allow, rather than committing to a single large-scale build.
- Dignity and privacy. Unlike shared shelter accommodation, each unit is self-contained, giving individuals their own private, secure space.
- Cost predictability. A defined, fitted-out unit gives councils and charities a clearer cost per unit than a traditional build, useful for budgeting and funding bids.
What a unit can include
Each pod can be insulated and fitted out with the essentials needed for safe, independent living, sleeping space, heating, secure access, and power, with the option to scale up to include washroom or kitchenette facilities depending on site and budget.
Working with councils and charities
We recognise that any accommodation solution for people experiencing homelessness needs to meet the right safety, welfare, and regulatory standards, and that funding, planning, and site selection all involve careful decision-making on the council's side. We're keen to work directly with local authorities and homelessness charities to understand specific needs and site constraints, and to talk through what's realistically achievable within a given budget and timeframe.
