Questions
Good to know
Do I need planning permission for a container in my garden?
Not always. Some garden outbuildings used for purposes incidental to the house — such as a gym, office or hobby room — can fall under permitted development if they meet size, height and position limits. Sleeping accommodation and separate dwellings normally need permission.
Do I need planning for a container home?
In most cases, yes. A home used as a main residence normally needs planning permission and Building Regulations approval.
What about a holiday let or glamping pod?
Tourist accommodation usually needs planning permission. Some sites may benefit from specific permitted development rights — your local planning authority can advise.
How can I find out for sure?
Check the Planning Portal’s guidance and speak to your local planning authority. Many councils offer pre-application advice. This page is general guidance, not legal advice.
